There, I said it. I'm wallowing. This too shall pass. It usually does.
Last post, the Colonel disappeared. Does he show up again, or is Mary left to wonder...?
"Miss Bennet, will you complete our foursome?"
She turned to face Mr. Camden, and once again a broad smile illuminated his handsome face. Idly, she wondered, did he grin like that through the night? How unsettling that would be for his future wife, to roll over and find him smiling at her in his sleep. She suppressed an involuntary shudder. That was something she had no intention of ever finding out.
Although her thoughts were less than lady-like, she presented a serene façade, worthy of her sister Jane and replied, "Of course, Mr. Camden. Lead the way."
He offered her his arm and escorted her to a table whereupon they were joined by Jonathan Lucas and, or course, Miss Talbot of twenty thousand pounds. Would she never be free of the simpering miss?HERE:
I can't help wondering how much of her dislike of Miss Talbot stems from her having 20K pounds.ReplyDelete
You are not wrong in thinking this is the root of her dislike. That, and Miss Talbot's perceived slightly superior attitude.Delete
She's missing possibilities in life instead of finding the best in people. What a foolish young woman. Sue, you are a terrific storyteller.ReplyDelete
Isn't that JUST the way when someone annoys you - suddenly they're everywhere! Enjoyed the snippet as always, sending good thoughts your way.ReplyDelete
Thank you for the good thoughts. It's a wonder what pain killers and muscle relaxants can do for you... Glad these past few weeks are OVER!Delete
He smiles too much? Okay, she's being a bit judgemental. She'd better learn to see the good as well as the bad, or she'll be lonely.ReplyDelete
"of twenty thousand pounds" . . . no spite there! Love her jaded view of things.ReplyDelete
Great snippet, although as Caitlin says, she does seem to see the worst in people - I reckon there could be a lot worse things than having a husband who smiles - even in his sleep, far better than one who scowls! You bring these characters to life so beautifullyReplyDelete
