WEEKEND WRITING WARRIORS #60

We continue with the agonizing dinner Richard is sitting through which ended with him muttering 'Broken teeth' when Miss Talbot asked what the others were talking about on the other side of the table. Fortunately, we will now see Mary's side of the scene.

"I beg your pardon?"
Dear God, how much longer would this meal go on? He caught himself up and turned to her with a bland smile. "I have no idea."
~~~oo0oo~~~
Mary offered a tight smile at Mr. Camden's attempt at humor. The man was utterly dreary. Beautiful to look at, but with the intelligence of a donkey. How cruel you are Mary, and she silently apologized to all the donkeys in England. She wondered how Colonel Fitzwilliam was doing, seated next to Lady Northcott and the highly eligible Miss Talbot of twenty thousand pounds.
No matter how far she craned her neck, she couldn't see past the veritable Sherwood Forest Mama had planted down the center of the table.
  1. Well, even though everyone seems to be keeping them apart, they only have eyes for each other. Nice snippet!
  2. This is the first scene I've ever read in which an epergne was a major character. (And I'm so proud of myself -- I spelled epergne right, though I checked myself afterward.)
    1. Well done, Ed. You'll be glad to know the epergne is not quite finished....
  7. I love Mary! She’s clearly very witty, if only to herself in that moment. :-)
  9. Not having too much fun is she? I've been to dinners like that.
  10. I love the humour in this snippet, especially Mary's apology to donkeys - I've done things like that myself, apologising to animals I've inadvertently insulted when it was the human I meant to insult :)
  11. "the veritable Sherwood Forest Mama had planted down the center of the table" Loved this line. So visual. Loved the humor, too. Good snippet.
  12. I wonder if her mother did that with the centerpieces on purpose? I know some dinners would be improved if some of the attendees couldn't see each other!
  13. Made me chuckle about her comparison of Mr. Camden's intelligence to a donkey, and then mentally apologizing to all the donkeys in England.
